Senior Survey Crew Chief


Furtado & Associates, Inc. (F&A) is a dynamic consulting firm based in Seattle WA, specializing in innovative land surveying, geospatial services, construction management, and engineering solutions. We are a privately held, DBE, MBE, SBE certified firm working on a variety of community improving infrastructure projects throughout the Puget Sound region, including Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail Extensions, WSDOT’s fish passage improvement program, and with various City and County agencies on utility, port and corridor projects. Our team currently has an opening for an experienced individual to fill the role of Senior Survey Crew Chief. Job Responsibilities:

You will be in responsible charge of a Survey Field Crew working primarily outdoors, exposed to a variety of weather conditions, operating industry standard survey equipment and learning industry leading technology. You will work daily under the supervision of the Survey Field Team Leads which will in turn be coordinating direction of Project Managers and Project Surveyors. All Land Surveying work will be performed under the direction and guidance of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor. 

Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to: 

  • Perform a diverse range of complete field surveys at a very proficient level 
  • Instruct, train, and mentor field personnel including the review of field work performed by the Survey Field Crew of which you are responsible charge 
  • Efficiently identify survey control and monumentation for both boundary survey and mapping activities 
  • Make appropriate decisions in the field and office regarding how to proceed with the survey tactics 
  • Gather a complete inventory of necessary information to properly accomplish a survey task in the most safe, effective and efficient manner. 
  • Demonstrate effective crew resource management by assigning tasks to Survey Crew personnel tasks throughout the day 
  • Perform data processing, field note reduction, survey calculations, field data checks, adjustments and staking computations using appropriate survey CAD & GIS programs 
  • Perform mathematical calculations using a calculator, consistent field data check approach and ability to learn and use spreadsheets 
  • Responsible for the care, maintenance, calibration and upkeep of survey equipment and vehicles 
  • Daily field data transfer and documentation tasks, such as the upload/download of data files and copying, scanning, and filing of field notes/pictures 
  • Team-mindset with proactive interaction and collaboration with field and office staff, occasionally clients, specific topics will be about project particulars and field survey

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 12+ years of Land Survey experience, with 7+ years as a Survey Party Chief. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of proper field procedures for boundary, right-of-way, ALTA, topographic, mapping, as-built, and monitoring surveys based on best practices. 
  • Legible and well-constructed written field notes, clear experience effectively managing a Survey Field Crew, running the survey equipment and training field and office staff on field surveying principles to progress their capabilities. 
  • Demonstrated competence in appropriately operating stationary laser scanners, GNSS receivers, modern total stations; differential levels, and survey software, such as Trimble Access, Trimble Business Center & MicroSurvey StarNET. 
  • Competence in using GNSS appropriately for surveys of various types, thorough practical experience in using the various functions of the modern total station, and substantial experience performing differential level work. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills. 
  • Focus on communication with team both written and verbal, this position relies on excellent and consistent communication. 
  • Experience working on large scale and/or complex projects. 
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50 lbs of equipment and supplies at a time throughout the workday. 
  • Due to the terrain in the Northwest, the ability to retain dexterity to successfully negotiate and maneuver along steep slopes and across uneven terrain is often required for site access. 
  • A clean driving record and a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to acquire one prior to employment. 
  • Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certification preferred, but not required 

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily outdoors along roadways, rivers, in the woods/brush, along the shoreline, in or around utility infrastructure and in or around private property. Occasional regional day travel and night work may be required.

Salary Range:

$39.75 – $62.46/hour
