Senior Survey Crew Chief


Furtado is a leading consulting engineering, land surveying and construction management firm in Seattle, WA. We are a small, privately held firm that works on transportation infrastructure projects throughout the Puget Sound area, including Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail Extensions and numerous projects for WSDOT and SDOT. Our busy office currently has an opportunity for a professional and experienced individual to fill the role of Senior Survey Crew Chief. Job Responsibilities:

You will be in responsible charge of a Survey Field Crew working primarily outdoors, exposed to ideal and inclement weather conditions, and operating assorted survey instruments and equipment.  You will work daily under the supervision of the Survey Manager.  All Land Surveying work will be performed under the direction and guidance of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.

Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Instruct, train, and mentor field-crew members and check all field work performed
  • Identify controls for property lines and make the appropriate decisions regarding how to proceed with the survey
  • Gather all necessary information needed to properly conduct the survey in the most time efficient manner and assign tasks to crew members
  • Perform data reduction, field note reduction, calculations, data checks and staking computations using survey programs and AutoCAD
  • Perform mathematical calculations and check field data
  • Responsible for the care and upkeep of survey equipment and vehicles
  • Daily office tasks, such as the upload and download of data and the copying, scanning, and filing of field notes are required
  • Interact and collaborate with office staff, and possibly clients, regarding project particulars and field related topics

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 12+ years of Land Survey experience, with 7+ years as a Survey Party Chief
  • High-level knowledge of proper field procedures for boundary, right-of-way, ALTA, topographic, mapping, as-built, and monitoring surveys
  • Must have a high-level competence in good field note taking, managing a crew, running the equipment and training newer staff to familiarize and educate them on field surveying principles
  • High-level knowledge of Leica HDS Scanners, Trimble GNSS units; Total Stations; Levels, and Trimble software, such as Survey Pro, Trimble Access and Trimble Business Center
  • High proficiency in the collection of data using GNSS, Total Station, and Digital Level equipment
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Experience working on large scale complex projects
  • Be able to lift and transport 50 lbs. of equipment and supplies throughout the workday
  • Some projects will require the dexterity to successfully negotiate and maneuver along steep slopes and across uneven terrain
  • A clean driving record and a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to acquire one prior to employment
  • Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) certification preferred, but not required

Work Environment:

 Work is performed primarily outdoors along roadways, rivers, in the woods/brush, along the shoreline, in or around utility infrastructure and in or around private property. Occasional regional day travel may be required.

Salary Range:

$39.75 – $62.46/hour
